Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door Leaked Spy Images

Maruti Suzuki is expected to launch the all-new Jimny in the Indian market next year. Even though Suzuki manufactures the Jimny in India, it is a three-door version and all the units produced are for the international markets only. The all-new Maruti Suzuki Jimny five-door seems to be production-ready as the pictures of the SUV under camouflage has surfaced online.

Suzuki Jimny 5-door takes shape; Starts testing abroad

The pictures by Suzuki Garage show that the five-door version of the Jimny will get an extended body that will allow the manufacturer to fit two extra doors. It will increase the cabin size of the car by a great deal and also make it more practical. Since Maruti Suzuki wants to target the family car buyers and not focus on the niche off-roading segment, it will only launch the five-door version of the SUV in India.

Will remain sub-4m

Even with an extended body length and size of the Jimny five-door, it will stay under four metres in length. However, even that will not help the car to get the small car tax benefits as the Jimny will get powered by the 1.5-litre petrol engine and that will not qualify for the tax discounts of the small car in India.

However, there are chances that Maruti Suzuki will bring a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine to get the benefits. Since Maruti Suzuki is yet to give out the exact details, we are not sure what the final product will get. However, the most chances are that the car will come with a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated engine and a more powerful version of the SHVS smart hybrid system with the SUV.

Both the transmission options – a four-speed automatic and a five-speed manual transmission will be available. Since it is an off-roading focussed vehicle, there will be a 4X4 system available with the Jimny. However, Maruti Suzuki may remove the 4X4 system to bring down the cost of the car and target a much wider audience.

The three-door variant may launch too

Maruti Suzuki will gauge the customer response and will decide if it wants to launch the three-door variant as well. All the cars that the Jimny will compete with offer three-door versions including the Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha. However, both the manufacturers – Force and Mahindra are themselves contemplating the five-door versions of the SUV.

Suzuki has started testing the five-door version of the Jimny internationally. The 5-door version looks exactly the same as the 3-door version but it gets a long wheelbase. Maruti Suzuki will target the families with the LWB version while the off-roading enthusiasts will likely choose the SWB Jimny, which is more capable.

Maruti Suzuki is yet to confirm the launch timeframe of the Jimny. However, there are strong chances of the vehicle getting launched in the first quarter of 2022.
