In its latest ‘life cycle assessment’ report made for its pure-electric Volvo C40 Recharge, Volvo stated that the greenhouse gases produced while manufacturing electric cars are 70 per cent higher than the same for a petrol-powered car. It is due to the higher intensity of carbon in the production of battery and steel and the increased share of aluminium in plug-in hybrid vehicles.

However, in its phase of ownership, an electric vehicle produces a much lower carbon footprint, compared to its petrol-powered counterpart. As per an estimate made by Volvo, an electric vehicle will prove to be a greener option, in the long run, provided it should be driven more than 30,000 miles from wind-generated electricity, or 68,400 miles from electricity produced by conventional methods.

Volvo has announced to become Electric Cars manufacturer by 2030

Volvo was one of the first luxury car makers to make a faster move towards electrification and ditching diesel powertrains altogether. It has already scrapped its diesel-powered offerings in India, with its complete range now having petrol-powered sedans and SUVs only. Volvo’s move is in line with the current global trend, as per which the sales of battery electric vehicles is expected to surpass those of diesel-powered vehicles by 2022.

Currently owned by Geely, Volvo has already declared that it will become a manufacturer of fully electric cars only by 2030. For this plan, the Swedish carmaker has already started working on different powertrains and platforms specifically made for its new generation battery electric vehicles. It is also eyeing achieving climate-neutral manufacturing by 2025. The current manufacturing plants of Volvo in Europe and China have already made their shift to using climate-neutral electricity.

With new generation offerings like XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, Volvo claims that its sales numbers of electric vehicles are increasing gradually. Currently, Volvo is planning to bring the XC40 Recharge to the Indian shores in early 2022, which will be Volvo’s first all-electric offering for India.
