Kia Motors Profitable In Just 2 years in India with Seltos & Sonnet

Kia Motors have turned profitable in just 2 years after entering the Indian market. This has been possible because their Sonet compact SUV and Seltos mid-size SUV are incredibly successful in our country. Kis has done a commendable job considering that last year, the automobile industry was adversely hit because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Kia has reported a profit of Rs 1,111 crore after tax for the year ended March 2021. In FY 2020, they had reported a loss of Rs. 239 Crores. In the last fiscal year, Kia’s turnover increased by 87 percent to Rs. 20,290 Crores. Kia sold a total of 16,331 Units in October 2021. Seltos was the highest selling mid-size SUV of the month with 10,488 unit dispatches whereas 5,443 units of Sonet were dispatched. These numbers are quite good considering that there is an ongoing semiconductor shortage. Kia even managed to dispatch 400 units of Carnival which is a luxury MPV.

The manufacturer is already working on a new MPV that has been codenamed KY. It is expected to be called Carens as Kia has filed a trademark for the nameplate. The manufacturing plant is located in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. The production plant is already producing Seltos, Sonet and Carnival. They are also exporting Seltos and Sonet to foreign countries. The upcoming Kia Carens will also be produced at the same plant. The manufacturer is expected to produce 3 lakh units of the new MPV annually.

Kia Sonet

Kia Sonet was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2020 as a concept. Everyone liked the aggressive and SUV styling of the Sonet. When the Sonet was launched in the Indian market, it looked very close to the concept. It retained its aggressive stance. Then there are the features that the Sonet comes with. It comes with features that we usually see on the higher-end SUVs.

Kia offers the Sonet in a wide variety of engine, gearbox and variant choices. There is a total of six variants on offer and three engine options to choose from. There is a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine, a 1.0-litre turbocharged engine and a 1.5-litre diesel engine also. The turbo petrol and diesel engine are also offered with an automatic gearbox. The prices of Sonet start at Rs. 6.89 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 13.55 lakhs ex-showroom. Kia has also launched Sonet’s anniversary edition in India.

Kia Seltos

Kia Seltos was the first SUV that was launched in India and it was an instant hit in the market. It was able to take the best selling position from the Hyundai Creta. Seltos has a big chunk of market share. It is offered in three engine options and seven variants. There is a diesel engine, a naturally aspirated petrol engine and a turbocharged petrol engine. All three engines are offered with a manual gearbox or automatic gearboxes. Seltos is also one of the most equipped mid-size SUVs on offer. The prices of Seltos starts at Rs. 9.95 lakhs ex-showroom and goes up to Rs. 18.10 lakhs ex-showroom. Kia launched the new X-Line variant of the Seltos recently.
